Leopardstown Christmas Festival Lexus Day

Leopardstown Christmas Festival Lexus Day

There was so much to talk about after last weekend’s games, says your guide to Gaelic Sports this summer Ciaran McGowan.

The footballers of Monaghan and Wexford both won, with latter worthy of particular mention beating Louth in a pulsating game in Drogheda. But it’s three hurling games that dominated post weekend analysis. While Kilkenny beat Offaly as expected, they conceded four goals and were made to work hard by a passionate and well prepared Offaly outfit.

Meanwhile, Dublin were lucky to escape with a draw against Wexford and will have to do it all again when both sides meet this Saturday in Parnell Park.

Usually when two teams draw, we like to say that neither deserved to lose. In this case, neither team did enough to win game. However Dublin hit 14 wides so I’m staying with them for replay.

The performance of weekend (perhaps year so far) was Limerick’s powerful win over Tipperary to earn them a well-deserved place in Munster final.

And so we are left with these three questions: 1. Are Kilkenny fallible? 2. Have Dublin lost their way? 3. Will we see Tipperary in Croker this year?

This year’s hurling championship may be a little more open than previously expected. So here’s a mad prediction – a team other than Kilkenny, Tipperary or Galway to be hurling champions? What do you think people?

Why not go on record and leave a comment below. And so to this weekend’s action.

GAA fixtures this weekend

Hurling:

Saturday 15th June Dublin v Wexford (19:00 GMT) – Ok, I know I said Dublin would win last week and they were lucky to get a draw but I’m staying with them. Prediction: Dublin

Sunday 16th June Laois v Galway (15:00 GMT) – I can’t see any surprises here, it has to be Galway. Prediction: Galway

Football:

Saturday 15th June Wicklow v Meath (19:00 GMT) – I think there is potential for a shock here. Wicklow have already played a game (beating Longford) that will stand to them. This might just give them edge over Meath. Prediction: Wicklow

Sunday 16th June Fermanagh v Cavan (14:00 GMT) – Cavan should edge this one Prediction: Cavan

Clare v Cork (15:30) – No surprises here Prediction: Cork

Mayo v Roscommon (16:00) – Mayo look a sure thing Prediction: Mayo
